After four years of trying, TrueWind Solutions has built a better weather vane. The company's new software predicts wind speeds around the globe, at any altitude, down to the hour. Used mostly to scout wind farm sites, the app can also determine the best time to fly a kite or start a controlled burn. The US Department of Energy enlisted TrueWind to generate a comprehensive Wind Resource Atlas of the United States. Maps like this one of Cape Cod, which shows air speeds of 12 to 21 mph, will influence much of the nation's wind energy development in coming decades.
